Building controls in Calgary
Building controls from thermostats to VFDs and room-condition monitoring.
- Thermostats & zoning
- Variable-frequency drives
- Room-condition monitoring
- Commissioning & troubleshooting
What we deliver
Equipment only performs as well as its controls. Gencon wires, programs, and commissions thermostats, timers, variable-frequency drives, and monitoring panels that track pressure, temperature, and humidity. Controls are labelled and documented so operators can run the building.
In a home, controls are the thermostat and the zones: what runs, when, and in which rooms. In a commercial building, they are the drives, sensors, timers, and monitoring panels that keep fans, pumps, and rooms where they should be. In the compounding pharmacy in our project library, a panel shows staff the rooms’ pressure, temperature, and humidity.
Our crews install the mechanical and electrical work too, so we plan the controls with the equipment they run.
In homes
- Thermostats
- Zoning
- Controls for heat pumps, furnaces, and garage heaters
- Troubleshooting

How we work
From estimate to walkthrough.
- 01
Estimate
A journeyman looks at the equipment, what it should do, and how it is controlled today.
- 02
Plan
We set out what runs when, which sensor or setting decides it, and who adjusts it, alongside the wiring and the permit.
- 03
Build
Our crews wire, program, and commission the controls with the equipment they run.
- 04
Walkthrough
We label and document the controls, then walk the operators or the homeowner through the settings.
Permits and codes
What applies in Calgary.
The agreed scope sets out the permits that apply and who is responsible for each inspection. Requirements outside Calgary should be confirmed with the local authority.
- In Calgary, electrical installations in new or renovated buildings need an electrical permit before the work begins, and new wiring or changes to existing branch circuits need one.
- Controls often arrive with new HVAC equipment, and the City requires a mechanical permit for all heating, ventilating and air conditioning installations in new buildings and renovations.
- Alberta’s electrical code is CSA C22.1-24, the Canadian Electrical Code (26th Edition), in force since April 1, 2025.
- Energy efficiency is part of Alberta’s building discipline: the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings 2020 has been in force since May 1, 2024.

What drives the cost
An accurate price needs a property-specific scope. These details move it most:
- The number of zones, sensors, and pieces of equipment
- Wiring distances and access
- Whether existing controls and wiring can stay
- The monitoring and alarms the space needs
- Programming and commissioning time
What affects the timeline
The schedule is confirmed after the scope has been assessed. These details shape it:
- The schedule of the equipment the controls run
- Programming and commissioning, which follow once the equipment runs
- Device availability
What does commissioning cover?
Checking that each control does what it should: sensors read correctly, equipment starts and stops when it is meant to, and drives run at the speeds set. We document the settings at handover.
Can you work with the controls I already have?
We look at what is installed during the estimate and tell you what can stay and what should change.
How do the controls work with a heat pump and a furnace?
In a hybrid system, the controls decide when the heat pump runs and when the furnace takes over. We set them up with the equipment and walk you through the settings at handover.
