Plumbing and gas fitting in Calgary
Licensed plumbing and gas fitting for underground services, rough-ins, fixtures, testing, and repairs.
- Boilers & water heaters
- Underground services
- Gas fitting & pressure testing
- Renovation rough-ins
What we deliver
Gencon journeymen handle the full water and gas scope: municipal service connections, under-slab drainage, boiler and water-heater installs, fixture finishing, and pressure-tested gas lines. One crew carries the work from trench to final inspection, on new builds and in occupied buildings.
Most plumbing and gas work sits inside something bigger: a basement or bathroom renovation, a new boiler or water heater, a tenant fit-out, or a new building’s underground services. Because the same contractor also coordinates the HVAC, electrical, and interior trades, the pipe goes in while the walls and slab are open.

How we work
From estimate to walkthrough.
- 01
Estimate
A journeyman looks at the existing piping, drains, gas supply, and fixtures, and at what has to be opened up to reach them.
- 02
Plan
The scope sets out the pipe routes, the gas line sizing, the inspection points, and the applicable permits.
- 03
Build
One crew carries the work from trench to final inspection. We pressure test gas lines before they go into service.
- 04
Walkthrough
We check the finished work with you and point out the shut-offs and service access.
Permits and codes
What applies in Calgary.
The agreed scope sets out the permits that apply and who is responsible for each inspection. Requirements outside Calgary should be confirmed with the local authority.
- In Calgary, all plumbing and gas installations need permits, renovation work included. A plumbing permit is needed when a plumbing system is constructed, extended or altered, including replacing water and sewer lines. Repairing a leak, clearing a blocked drain, or replacing faucets and fixtures does not need one.
- Gas lines must be installed by an Alberta certified journeyman gas fitter. Homeowners can apply for every permit type except a gas permit, unless they are certified journeyman gasfitters working on a single-family home.
- Replacing a hot water tank needs a permit when it changes the gas line upstream of the water heater’s shut-off valve, the venting, or the type of water heater, such as a natural draft tank replaced by a direct vent one.
- Alberta’s codes in force are the National Plumbing Code of Canada 2020, since April 1, 2023, and CSA B149.1:25, the Natural gas and propane installation code, since March 1, 2026.

What drives the cost
An accurate price needs a property-specific scope. These details move it most:
- How much has to be opened up: concrete, finished walls, or ceilings
- Pipe lengths and routes, and connections to the existing drains and stack
- Gas line length, and the total load of the appliances it supplies
- The fixtures, water heater, or boiler you choose
- Excavation and restoration for underground services
- Permits, inspections, and testing
What affects the timeline
The schedule is confirmed after the scope has been assessed. These details shape it:
- Inspections, which happen before the work is covered
- Fixture and equipment availability
- Concrete cutting and slab work
- Shut-offs planned around the people using the building
Can I take out the permit myself?
For plumbing in a home you own and live in, the City allows a homeowner permit if you do the work yourself. Gas is different: a homeowner cannot take out a gas permit unless they are a certified journeyman gasfitter. If you hire a contractor, the contractor applies for the permit.
Can you work in an occupied home or building?
Yes. Our crews work on new builds and in occupied buildings, and we plan shut-offs and access with you ahead of time.
Do you install boilers and water heaters?
Yes. Boilers and water heaters are part of our plumbing and gas work, from the gas and water connections to the piping. The project library includes a wall-hung condensing boiler installed with its expansion tank and glycol feeder.
