What we deliver
Gencon installs and services complete HVAC systems: furnaces, air conditioning, and ventilation in homes, and rooftop and suspended air-handling units, make-up air, and the controls that run them in commercial buildings. Design, installation, air balancing, and diagnostics come from the same team, so systems perform the way the drawings promised.
For a homeowner, the job usually starts with a furnace near the end of its life, a house that needs cooling, or rooms that never feel right. For a building, it is often a rooftop unit to replace or a space that needs more air. Either way, we size the equipment to the space and connect the gas, power, ductwork, and controls as one job.
Thinking about a heat pump? A compatible furnace can stay as backup heat in a hybrid system. We install both, and we can help you compare the options for your home.

How we work
From estimate to walkthrough.
- 01
Estimate
A journeyman looks at the equipment you have, the ductwork or roof access, and the gas and power already in place, then talks through the options with you.
- 02
Plan
We size the equipment to the heat loss and cooling load, and put the gas, electrical, and controls work into one schedule. The agreed scope lists the applicable permits.
- 03
Build
Our crews set the equipment, make the gas, power, duct, and control connections, and start the system up.
- 04
Walkthrough
We balance and check the system, then walk you through the thermostat, filter changes, and the next service.
Permits and codes
What applies in Calgary.
The agreed scope sets out the permits that apply and who is responsible for each inspection. Requirements outside Calgary should be confirmed with the local authority.
- In Calgary, all heating, ventilating and air conditioning installations in new buildings and renovations need a mechanical permit, and every furnace installation or replacement needs a permit. Air conditioning equipment needs one or more permits.
- The City issues mechanical and furnace permits to qualified HVAC contractors and gas permits to qualified gas fitters. It does not allow homeowners to take out a mechanical permit on their own house, or to do work that involves natural gas.
- Gas work in Alberta follows CSA B149.1:25, the Natural gas and propane installation code, in force since March 1, 2026.
- Alberta’s halocarbon rules cover the refrigerants used in air conditioning: only people authorized under the Skilled Trades and Apprenticeship Education Act may service equipment that contains them, and releasing them is prohibited.

What drives the cost
An accurate price needs a property-specific scope. These details move it most:
- The type and size of equipment, which follows the heat loss and cooling load of the space
- The condition of the existing ductwork, and any changes it needs for the new airflow
- Venting, gas line, and electrical changes the new equipment needs
- Access: a tight furnace room, an attic, or a crane lift to a roof
- Controls and zoning
- Balancing and commissioning on larger systems
What affects the timeline
The schedule is confirmed after the scope has been assessed. These details shape it:
- Equipment availability, especially for commercial rooftop units
- Permit and inspection scheduling
- Crane bookings and weather for rooftop work
- Whether the home or building stays occupied, which can mean phasing the work
Do I need a permit to replace my furnace in Calgary?
Yes. The City requires a permit for every furnace installation and replacement, and issues it to a qualified HVAC contractor. A furnace replacement permit covers the appliance and venting only, so changes to the gas line or ductwork go on other permits.
Should I replace my furnace or add a heat pump?
That depends on the age and condition of the furnace, your ductwork, your electrical service, and whether you want cooling. In a compatible hybrid system, a heat pump and a furnace work together. We can look at both options with you.
Do you work on commercial rooftop units?
Yes. We install and service rooftop units, make-up air units, and air handlers, along with the gas, power, ductwork, and controls they need.
